Auror recently welcomed Alec Shiya as Director of Engineering.
We had a quick chat to learn more about Alec's background and motivation to join Auror.
Let's meet Alec!
Why did you join Auror?
So many reasons! The people and culture is a big factor. Auror has built a remarkably healthy and positive environment full of fantastic people working on a pretty cool product. On top of that, I am always excited when a Kiwi software company expands beyond Australasia - it’s a great journey to be a part of.
How did you first hear about Auror?
I’ve been familiar with Auror for a few years now. Friends and colleagues who have joined Auror over the years have consistently pitched it as a great place to work.
What excites you about Retail Crime Intelligence?
I’m fascinated at how this domain intersects with universal issues. Crime prevention is a pervasive challenge across human history and society.
Many countries handle these issues very differently, so as Auror expands globally it’ll be exciting to see how we can integrate and adapt the technology for different cultures.
Can you summarize your career journey?
I started programming in high school with the vague ambition of making computer games. Since university, I have worked entirely in software development - first in the US, and then in NZ, primarily doing SaaS product development.
Pretty quickly, I learned I could add the most value by helping all the other, more brilliant engineers around me do their work better. So over time I’ve gravitated towards more supportive or collaborative roles such as this one.
What’s Alec doing for fun outside of work?
Reading and gaming - particularly anything sci-fi related that’ll pull my brain into another world.
