“We have a serious, and often violent, retail crime issue impacting our communities around the world. Almost 20% of all retail crime events reported in Auror involve aggression, verbal or physical — even the use of weapons. It’s just not acceptable.”
US retailers experienced a 9% increase in the value of retail crime
loss compared to the 12 months prior. A small portion — just 10% of offenders — account for 68% of the total event value. Organized Retail Crime (ORC) compounds these issues, allowing repeat offenders and networks to expand their operations.
While the median retail event value in the US is $51, the mean is more than 4X greater at $215 due to outlier events sometimes north of $1M. That paired with the fact that average event value by the top 10% of offenders by value is just under $890 speaks
to the stark difference between the scale of events powered by ORC and repeat offenders compared to opportunistic offenders.
“Organized retail crime is a community problem. The potential impact of outpacing organized crime extends beyond the bottom line and product loss. We must work together to identify, prevent, and prosecute that 10% of offenders causing the most harm and loss.”
In 2023, researchers found the perception of in-store violence among retailers had increased 40% from the year before (Source: Statista). Our 2024 findings validate what nearly half of retailers perceived a year prior: Serious behaviors increased 20% from the year prior while threatening behaviors, which include aggression, physical abuse, or weapons, increased 28%.

Retail crime has become too sophisticated to track with reactive solutions. Traditional case management does not do enough to connect multiple events to offenders. Retailers need a solution that connects retailers, law enforcement, and the communities they serve to stop crime, for good.

enough to know that rates have increased or decreased –
organizations need to know how and why they have changed.
