Safety concerns and violence are nothing new to retailers, with violent incidents only increasing in frequency and severity in recent years.

According to The Impact of Retail Theft and Violence 2024 Report, 73% of retailers surveyed said shoplifters were more violent and aggressive than they were in the previous year. Meanwhile, 84% said violence during crimes became more of a concern in 2024 and 76% said they have had to implement security measures that negatively impact the customer experience.

Based on information reported on Auror’s platform, we can see that 10% of offenders cause 70% of crime events. We also know repeat offenders are four times more likely to cause a safety event. Knowing this, we can help retailers through a combination of proactive reporting, actionable insights, data aggregation, and empowering collaboration to increase safety in their stores.

How retail stores stay safe with Auror

Auror helps improve safety in retail stores and communities through:

Responsible and proactive reporting

Auror’s Retail Crime Intelligence platform empowers AP/LP teams, retail frontline staff, law enforcement, and trusted partners to responsibly report crime events and to distribute that intelligence in real-time to those who need it.

By doing this, retail teams are better prepared to manage offenders. If an incoming repeat offender with a history of violent behavior is matched, they can address that situation safely without unintentionally putting themselves and customers in danger.

Even if the offender gets away, the platform empowers staff to report the incident, upload evidence, and make a report to police.

Connecting the dots

Using event, people, vehicle, and product information, the platform helps to build a fuller picture of offending by aggregating data and helping connect events to perpetrators.

By connecting the dots, users can identify the offenders who are causing them the most harm, what behaviors they’re exhibiting, the locations they’re targeting, the true value of harm and loss they are causing, and other insightful patterns.

With this data, retailers can make more informed decisions around the security and safety of their frontline teams and better prevent safety incidents.

Collaboration at scale

Auror’s platform is designed with collaboration at heart, helping to break down silos and provide the visibility needed to prevent crime and keep staff and customers safe.

Retailers can collaborate across their own organization, with law enforcement, and industry bodies to report and share intel on the people causing them the most harm. Several interstate Organized Retail Crime (ORC) crime groups in North America have been identified and targeted as a result of retailers, retail organizations, and police working together on Auror’s platform.

Safety in numbers

Based on events reported by Auror partners on the platform across New Zealand, Australia, the United States, the average number of serious behavior events involving aggression, physical abuse, and/or weapons across 2023 and 2024 increased by 17% compared with the previous year.

Of all the serious behavior events reported between January 1 and December 31, 2024, 54% on average were prevented

Customer stories

Auror customers experience wins through the platform every day. Here are some examples featuring safety and security incidents.

New Zealand

A prolific and aggressive offender in New Zealand was sentenced to imprisonment after several shoplifting events worth over NZ$72K in loss. The offender considered shoplifting “like a job” and targeted 26 retailers across Auckland and often displayed aggressive and abusive behavior towards staff and security personnel.

Thanks to excellent collaboration between retailers and police, and high quality evidence on Auror's platform, police were able to arrest and charge the offender on several counts of shoplifting.

A judge sentenced this person to three years in prison.

Australia

Just two days after launching a targeted operation aimed at curtailing aggression and violent retail crime offenders, police in one Australian state were able to leverage evidence in Auror’s platform to arrest their top offender of interest. This person was responsible for over A$88K in loss across 300+ reported events.

United States

Three offenders in the US were arrested for 70 reported events worth $41K+ in USD. Two of these offenders were violent, threatening, and often carried weapons, targeting a popular beauty retailer all along the eastern half of the US.

During a shoplifting event, the manager of one of the stores recognized the trio immediately from seeing them in Auror’s platform and noticed they were acting suspiciously. Police were called and showed up quickly to arrest the group.

What our customers have said

From a Senior Director Asset Protection Operations of a leading retailer in the United States:

“Teams are looking up or noticing an offender from the feed, reviewing for flags, and then not engaging. The best thing I could ever hear is that no one is putting themselves in harm’s way. It’s making a big difference.”

From a Loss Prevention Specialist at an Australian retailer:

The platform is a great tool for retailers to have to be able to capture the behavior of our customers on where they could be a threat to our team and customer safety.  Being able to connect the dots, have the support with the Police on being able to follow-up on offenders.
